Field Day 2013

Field Day this year was split into two days.  May 23rd was the field day for Julia and Blake and the 24th was for Brayden.  They changed field day back to how it was originally where they get to choose 4 events, a running race, and the tug of war in classes.  

Julia chose the events of soccer punt, hula hoop relay, flag pull, and obstacle course. I was able to watch her in two of her events the hula hoop relay where her team got 1st and the flag pull.

Blake is in Pre-K so they assigned them a 4th grade buddy to help them do the events.  They didn't compete, they were able to "try" the events.   He did the scooter race, hula hoop race, basketball throw, and obstacle course.

I missed Brayden's field day because Blake had his field trip on the same day.  He competed in the tennis ball throw, scooter relay where they got 1st and in the Obstacle Course where he placed 3rd. Part of his events were cancelled because it rained in the afternoon.  I ended up going on May 30th to the make up day and got to see him run a race where he got 1st place.  The kids really enjoyed participating in Field Day.  They especially like the class competitions of Tug of War.

Career Day, Take Two

The kids came home very excited about having career day.  Each class had 3 different presenters. Since Matt was able to share his career with the 2nd graders (Brayden's class) last year, this year he signed up and requested to present in the 5th grade so that he could do Kylee's class.  Blake and I went to go see Matt talk to Kylee's class.He was very entertaining. Kylee said that most of the kids in her class enjoyed his presentation the most.

Besides hearing from an Ophthalmologist she also got to hear from a Pathologist, but she thought the presentation was "kind of disgusting."  The last presenter was an employee of Starbucks.  Kylee was excited that she gave everyone a cup that represents a free cup of hot chocolate.

Career day is a good way for business to get their name out and have kids tell their parents about their businesses and get them to come, which is the effect it had on Brayden.  He was very influenced by the gymnastics presentation.   On our drive home he told us one of the gymnasts did push ups with no feet on the ground and described all the fun things they have at the Powerhouse Gym.  Kylee, who had attended a party there, chimed in that they have a foam pit.  Brayden responded with "I know, that place is awesome."   He was very excited to tell  me that the Powerhouse Gym has a "Fun Friday" where kids can be dropped off for 3 hours for $15 while the parents go out.  After we got home from school he continued to talk about it and even offered to pay all the money he thought he had, which was $10.  I let him know that he would not be going to Powerhouse gym that evening.  In just 10 minutes later I let the kids know I was going to go to the store and Brayden not ready to give up chimed in, "That's the thing.  You can go shopping and we can go there (the gym)."  Matt was home so I started to head out the door to run some errands and Brayden in his typical positive persistent manner put his shoes on and said, "Alright let's go.  I am ready to go to the gym."   I let him know again that he wasn't going, but he kept saying, "I am ready, let's go."  He finally gave up and took his shoes back off.  For career day Brayden also had a person that worked in the Toyota plant visit his class.  He said that he showed them something top secret.  He wouldn't tell me what it was, but said that it had something to do with the paint section because that is the area that the guy worked in.  He liked that he gave them a pen, a brochure, and a back pack.  The last person that visited them was a man that works for the water company.  He actually got to see him last year also.  He was happy that he brought a little foam cone for everyone.

Julia saw the Northside nutritionist.  Julia said that she said, "eat healthy food and get moving. Do not watch TV all the time, and do exercising activities."  The nutritionist brought the monkey mascot that everyone got to high 5.  The second person for them to see was a DJ that works at the radio station.  Julia said "he can't mess up or everyone will hear on the radio station."  He asked them to raise their hand if they liked Justin Beiber, Julia said that she kept her had down.  Kylee and Brayden congratulated Julia with, "great job for keeping your hand down."  I asked if anyone raised their hand.  The last person she saw was a martial arts instructor.  Julia liked that they got to touch Karate weapons and put on karate stuff for safety.

At the end they have a person that the whole school gets to watch. He was a musical person that played the halo.  Brayden said, "it is an instrument that was invented 5 years ago.  It was awesome.  He has his own website."

True Loves Kiss

Julia had a dance recital on May 18th which was held at the church.  Her class did a ballet dance to the song True Love's Kiss from the Disney movie Enchanted.

This year at Bob Lewis the theme for field day was In It to Win It.  They changed the traditional relay races to short one minute competitions patterned after the Minute To Win It game show.  Each child had a partner that they would stay with as they chose between 50 different games to do as many as they wanted in a couple of hours.

It was nice that Blake was allowed to take part in some of the games.

The consensus at the end of the day by the kids was that they liked the traditional games better.  I thought that this new way was a lot more chaotic.  The kids had the freedom to wander around and not really do much.  The little kids were kind of running around not really knowing what to do.

Fiesta

Bob Lewis Elementary does a pretty good job celebrating Fiesta week.  This year they wanted to make sure that each of the grades were able to do something special.  The Kindergarden classes are involved in the Fiesta Float Parade and the 3rd Graders get to do the Wax Museum, so it was the first year that 1st, 2nd, 4th, and 5th were apart of a science hat parade.  Each child was given a science term that they had to represent on a hat, and they could be however creative they wanted.  Kylee was not very good about communicating the assignment.  We bought the materials and she made it in one night since it was already past due.  On April 12th they had a parade and all the grades involved showed off their science hats.

This year was Julia's turn for the Fiesta Float Parade.  I tried to make things a little easier and found a foam kit at Michael's that she used with her fairies to make a fairy land.  We cut out a lot of foam flowers to add to it.   

This year they had a better set up to view the parade which was on April 20th.  In years past we had to stand in the hallway as the kids pulled their fiesta float through the hallways.  This year that set up chairs in the gym so the parents could sit down and watch the kids pull their floats by.  They even had them go through twice.   

At Blake's MDO they also got to make a Fiesta hat on April 26th.

After a several week long slow death, the Maytag repair man informed us that our washing machine of twelve years was not going to make it, or at least it would cost more than it was worth to repair.  This lead to the purchase of a new front loading washer, which apparently is much more entertaining for the kids.  They discovered that it is fun to watch the cycle spinning around and at the end of the cycle it plays is a fun little tune.  The minutes count down on the digital display, and when there are just a few minutes left whoever is around will call the others to come and sit down and watch until the end of the cycle.  

Randy's everywhere

With the return of Randy Julia has had him on her mind.  She has been creating Randy drawings whenever and wherever she has the chance.  They are on the backs of school work, on a card for Uncle Ryan, notebooks used at church and anywhere else she has a chance to draw.

        

100th day celebration and tooth lost

In celebration of the 100th day of school on February 1st  Julia had an assignment of creating a poster with 100 items.  In true Julia style she made the poster with jewels.  

As an extra celebration for the 100th day of school Julia lost her 1st tooth at school.

Julia lost her 2nd tooth on February 7, 2012.  When she left for school that morning her tooth was barely hanging on, but she wasn't ready to take it out yet.  She ended up losing it sometime during the school day and didn't even notice until she was leaving to go home and her tooth was not in her mouth.  All the students started looking in the classroom for her tooth.  Luckily her teacher Mrs. Lehr found it underneath the art easel.  She was able to bring it home and get money from the tooth fairy.

Matt had a "honey do" list to work on around the house while I was in Hawaii with my sisters and parents and he stayed home with the kids.  On his list was redoing the shelving in the closet of our guest room/office.  After I got back I was organizing the closet and sorting through things when I noticed the green backpack. I thought it was empty, but when I looked inside I found the original Randy that had gone missing 10 months before.  We had given up hope and thought he would never return from his vacation so we had already replaced him.

I called Julia and had her come look in the backpack.

Julia was so excited.  She immediately understood that it was her long lost Randy and that the one she had recently been loving was "New Randy", but she wasn't upset at all about being deceived.  She was happy to the point of giddiness to have TWO Randys and she spent the rest of the day having them talk to each other, play, and just get to know each other.  Fortunately, Julia has enough love for both of them.

All I want for Christmas...

Julia had another dance performance on December 17, 2011.  Her class danced tap to the song All I Want for Christmas is My Two Front Teeth.  Julia continues to enjoy dance and looks forward to her weekly class.

Julia's 6th birthday

Julia's birthday was the day after coming back from my Hawaii trip.  A lot of her birthday present shopping was done in Hawaii.

Julia has been wanting to get her own purse and not a play purse.  So we thought it would fun if Matt made her a purse cake.

Witte Museum Field Trip

Julia's Kindergarten class had a field trip to the Witte Museum on November 17, 2011.  Since it landed on a Thursday and Blake was at Mother's Day Out, I was able to go and chaperone.  The lower grades tend to have more parent involvement so there was a 1 parent to 2 students ratio.  It was very different from when I went to chaperone Brayden's 3rd grade class at Sea World and it was only me and the teacher with the whole class of students.

The Witte Museum had a special Shipwreck and pirate exhibition that allowed Julia to practice her pirating skills with some friends.

There was a hurricane simulation with winds up to 70 mph.  It was one of her favorite things and probably went in there 10-15 times.  Julia enjoyed being dramatic every time she went in. 

After the museum the class ate lunch and then went to the nearby Brackenridge park to play.  It was a lot of fun and I was happy I could go along and spend the day with Julia.

The week after school was out  Kylee and Julia were invited to be a part of camp half blood.  A brave Mom hosted about 15 girls at her house for 3 hours each day with activities based on the book Percy Jackson and the Olympians.

On Thursday, June 9th we were able to join as a family at a local farm to ride a pegasus (horse).  They also got to feed and pet other animals, and went on a short hay ride.

The week ended up with the girls swimming at their pool and then all the families got together for a potluck and to watch the play they rehearsed all week.  Kylee and Julia both played the role of a mouse.
